Introduction to Fracking

What is fracking?

Fracking is a technique used to release petroleum, natural gas or other substances for extraction. Basically, it is a way of getting oil and gas.

What is its history?
  • 1949: first experiment of fracking by Stanolind Oil in Grant Country, Kansas
  • 1970s: widespread use of fracking
  • until early 2000s: vertical fracking
  • 2005: Energy Policy Act
-fracking excused from Safe Drinking Water Act
      -fracking boom
How does it work?
  1. A large area is gutted out of the ground.
  2. An underground tunnel is crafted, combining with the gutted area to be in the shape of an "L."
  3. Natural gas flows up out of the hole.

Fracking sounds really bad. I knew originally that fracking probably wastes water and whatnot, but the story about the "setting water on fire" is kind of gross. People should definitely know more about this! I had no idea what it was, but evidently it's ruining entire communities and the unclean water is probably contributing to a lot of health problems within the area. I think it would be best if communities took a stand together to stop large companies who want to use fracking in their communities from doing so. Hopefully this doesn't keep happening, because our water supply isn't the best as it is. -Isabelle, period 4/5

I agree. Fracking does have many negative aspects. There are even numerous reports from several media outlets stating that fracking can cause earthquakes. I agree that fracking is morally and environmentally wrong. However, most people can't help but take the bribe.

Fracking sounds really terrible. Like, I had heard of it before, but I never really knew what it was. I mean, it would be nice for our economic outlook, and porbably help a lot...if we totally ignore all the super terrible moral stuff and all the people whose water supply will be affected. If I lived in an area that had fracking occuring, I'm pretty sure I would either a)Move the heck outta there or b)Raise a huge protest against it and go all extreme strike/riot mode. People can't always just think about the money- even though that's what make the world go round. We aslo have to worry about the moral and ethical aspects, and how it will affect the common American.-Marissa Z. \PER.9/10

After watching the video about the woman setting the water from her sink on fire, my whole view of fracking turned from positive to negative. At first I thought it was just another way to obtain oil and people were complaining how terrible it is because, that's what people do about many things. Through reading all of the information about fracking, I started to think to myself "you know, this probably isn't good" and then the video just topped everything off. There's definitely something wrong if people can set their kitchen sink on fire. There's no doubt about that.
The website was well organized and interesting. I liked how the information was displayed, it made getting to know what fracking was easier than having to search through information.

I didn't have a clue about what fracking was until I read this, but it sounds horrible. The fact that people can be drinking contaminated water without knowledge of it is insane; this shouldn't be exempt from the Clean Water Act. An earthquake linked to fracking, sink water being able to be lit on fire, higher cancer rates in higher areas of fracking, and illnesses from these water supplies isn't something that can be just put under the carpet. The government should definetly interfere and revise fracking way more; if not find a complete alternative. Fracking is obviously ethically wrong and something should be done about it.

Before coming to this site, I never knew that fracking existed. I was surprised at how bad fracking actually was for the environment. I honestly could not believe that it was linked to earthquakes and that it horribly contaminated drinking water. The fact that fracking can lead to higher cancer rates is rather frightening. Furthermore, upon learning that fracking is exempt from the Clean Water Act, I felt that it should not be. Putting harmful chemicals into the water that is used to pump the gas wells could lead to extreme water contamination is nothing short of serious. I feel as if something should be done due to the fact that people’s lives are at risk. Reading through this site has really opened my eyes to the fracking industry.

This site really opened my eyes because before I came to this site, I had never even heard of any such thing as fracking but after reading the information on this site, I was really amazed. It really boggles my mind to hear the fact that people are drinking contaminated water without them even knowing it. Also, the fact that it can lead to such dangerous diseases and illnesses is definitely unethical. It is also very dangerous to see that it can cause earthquakes. This is just wrong and should but stopped.

The topic of fracking is very new to me since I recently found out about it. The site was ver informative, it help me by explaining what fracking was and explaining the pros and cons of fracking. Even though fracking can produce a lot of money it is still damaging the environment and people around fracking areas. I found the videos to be very interesting because it helped me realize how harmful fracking really is. Overall this page really opened up my eyes and see how big industries are destroying the environment.

I had no idea was fracking was. This website made understanding the concept of fracking easy. It seems most of the pros of fracking revolve around money, and it's sad that money is enough reason for people to continue risking the health of people and animals when it has been linked to cancer and earthquakes. Also, you shouldn't be able to set water on fire ... (looks cool though) (but wrong)

Wow. All of this is very eye-opening. I never fully understood what fracking was until I checked out this blog. All I knew was that it was a controversial topic. After reading what you have researched and then posted, it has really made me realize how much it impacts our lives and the lives around us.The thought of being able to set water on fire is just very strange. (Kind of an oxymoron.....) Anyway, this topic sheds a light on the fact that we really need to start thinking about what we are doing to the environment.

  11. I actually knew about fracking because of a video I watched about natural gas. It's quite horrible that there are dangerous after effects of fracking because natural gas could be the next energy source that could be used instead of oil. It seems unreal how water could just be set on fire like that. Even if it is a way to get a new source of energy, this practice must be stopped. It's too dangerous for this to poison our drinking water and destroy our environment. Even though fracking has a good intention, the health of the earth and its people is more important. :)

Until I read through this website I had never heard of fracking and had no idea of its affects on the planet and the people around fracking sites. This website made fracking easy to comprehend and the videos gave valued incite to personal problems that arise from fracking. After learning more about this procedure, I haven’t found good enough reasons for people to continue fracking and I believe that alternative ways should be used. I don’t believe I will ever understand how the want for money can cause someone to look over the obvious harm that is being done to the environment and so many people in such horrible ways.

  14. I have heard of fracking before; however, I was not sure of what it is. This website was very informational and helped me to understand how crucial it is to understand what fracking is. I now know that is the extraction of natural gas from the Earth. I've learned that fracking directly affects people and their drinking water. I believe that they should put an end to fracking for the good of the people. It is clearly not healthy to drink combustible water. Although natural gas is a major energy source, it should not be obtained through fracking. Alternatives should be found to harvest the energy that will help people and wildlife.
(Good job on the website! Very informational! :) )

Natural Gas is much better for the environment than gasoline when comparing emissions, but the process by which natural gas is obtained is almost sickening. Seeing videos of these poor people who live near fracking sites lighting their tap water on fire really shows the fallacy of fracking. I personally think they should devise a new way to extract natural gas from underground reserves which would not negatively affect the geography of the area being sourced or locals living near the operation. The website was organized nicely and the information displayed well. I liked the videos that were provided for they really helped me further understand the process and aspects of fracking.
