Opinion

We think that the negative effects of fracking outweigh the benfits. After watching videos of people in small communities being able to set their water on fire and reading about the story of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, we have realized how horribly it affects people's lives. Natural gas companies go into small, poor communities and take advantage of them by promising them jobs, money, and prosperity, much like Matt Damon's character does in Gus Van Sant's Promised Land. This may work in the short term, but in the long term their water supply is forever ruined. Poor communities take this bait and suffer the consequences. It is also difficult to fathom how this process can be exempt from regulation, such as the Clean Water Act. The companies are pumping harmful chemicals into the earth that end up in our water supply without any regulation. They are simply allowed to do as they please with little regard for human health.
If the natural gas industry went away, we believe that we would suffer some economic consequences, but our health would be better. If this went away, it would eliminate the risk of water contamination and human beings causing earthquakes near our own homes. We need to start moving to other energy sources that don’t give us cancer or birth defects. We strongly believe that there is a better alternative to fracking. There has to be. Hopefully people will start to see this and there won’t be more sad situations like Luzerne County and other towns in America and the world.

I have not personally experienced any of the consequences of fracking, but from reading the information that you have displayed, it is safe to say that fracking is not safe at all. What I have learned of fracking is how it is carried out (by crafting tunnels underground and forcing the natural oils to surface) and how it can affect people by contaminating water and causing illnesses like cancer. Now that I know more about fracking and the dangers that come with it, I will be more aware of the things that go on around me when it comes to gaining cheaper oil.

Fracking is something that hasn't really affected me because I never lived in an area where fracking has occurred. Fracking doesn't seem to benefit anyone. Natural gas will eventually run out in specific area where fracking has occurred, and the contamination of drinking water (which could lead to diseases), increased cancer rates, and the increased death of animals does not seem worth the same as money for mineral rights, and jobs. To think that this is happening all over the world, especially in the United States, is defiantly very shocking, that a few million dollars is worth all the negative consequences in the eyes of certain people.

  3. I am surprised that something that is known for devastating environments is used as if it didn't at all. It is merely for profit, which is most certainly a valid reason, but how reasonable? It contaminates water and whomever drink from it. A popular alternative is needed to replace this procedure because there is only a negative outcome when you destroy the natural for artificial stability.-Jay

I believe that fracking is far to dangerous for the environment to be used on a regular bases. What is the point of having energy if all the water is contaminated and people and animals are suffering because of it. I believe fracking should be cut drastically, if not stopped completely. Also, the companies should be required to disclose what chemicals are used and have to go through health and safety tests before putting them in use. The United Staes should try to become more independent from other countries in our energy needs, but the way to do it is not through fracking. Instead we should be looking for efficient, clean, and renewable energy sources.

  5. Fracking is designed mainly for profit. The reason its spreading is because of the bribing going on. It actually works too due to the great amount of the bribe, unlike that woman who refused to sell to Trump Plaza. The bribe is tough to resist too. Therefore, due to the bribes, the government should crack down from fracking especially in the United States. Who cares if we're dependent on Russia or the Middle East for energy. At least over there, the population density isn't as high as in the United States. Also, not only should we crack down on tracking, but on oil altogether. We should start looking towards clean energy. Cities should use solar power instead especially cities in the midwest since they have a lot of flat space. New homes should be required to have solar panels on the roof in order to be approved to be built.

  6. Hey there! Your project looks great and is very professional, yet understandable! I had no clue what on earth fracking was. Now I understand that it is widely used in certain parts of the world even though it is highly controversial. I would like to say that if a process of any kind is so capable of damage, it should be terminated. However, this would impact the world economically and probably politically. Then again, fracking is a health issue considering the chance of obtaining cancer from the oils and gases which surface after the underground drilling. It is a sticky situation, which could end up being drastically pricey.

  7. Before reading your page I did not know what fracking was, I have never even heard of it. I was glad to learn something new and your information about it is very well organized. I believe that fracking can be good if they find a safer and more efficient way of doing it. If fracking is causing all of this damage, it should be stopped until technology has improved and they can obtain the natural gas without wasting 3-5 million gallons of water per well or contaminating our water. Coming from someone who knew nothing of fracking, you really explained it well and it was easy to understand.

Honestly, I never knew what fracking was. Well I didn't know you call this fracking. Though I heard of this concept before. Fracking can improve the oil industry, but it should be stopped if it contaminates water. I think that fracking is a great technique to obtain oil, but if it harms the human health, then they should avoid using it until it is fully improved and even safer. This page consisted of a great amount of information and was well explained. It was well organized and you guys did a great job on teaching us something new.

Before reading the information on this site, I thought fracking was just a substitute for a bad word. Good thing I read this, I guess. On a more serious note, I learned a lot about fracking from this site. It's easy to read and very informative. While it's great that fracking has helped the United States' economically, the negative aspects outweigh the positive ones. The fact that it's exempt from the Clean Water Act is repulsive. I should not have to try to set my water on fire in order to determine if it's safe to drink or not. If fault lines that are over a mile underground can be disturbed by this process and cause earthquakes in areas that don't normally get them, the process should be stopped.

I did not know anything about what fracking was or what fracking meant. Now I learned that fracking is getting oil and gas. I also learned that there are positive but also a lot of negative aspects of fracking. Fracking has helped United States become more independent. Also fracking is an energy source. Fracking also have negative aspects. Fracking contaminates water and that is unhealthy for everyone. There are a lot of negative aspects, so fracking should be stopped to protect the earth.

Fracking, by what I've read here is extremely dangerous. I believe there should be a law against fracking. The negative effects do outweigh the benefits. The fact that fracking is not exempt from the Clean Water Act is terrible. By exempting fracking from this law, the goverment is literally allowing the contamination of water, which humans will eventually drink. Though fracking is an energy source, it is a very poor and harmful way to get energy. This should also be stopped because of the cancer that it causes, and the fact that it also cause it could cause eathquakes. Fracking should be stopped because it is unethical.

  12. I only knew a little about what fracking was before I came to this website. After watching those videos that you guys posted, it really scares me to think that the people's drinking water are actually combustible. That's ridiculous. Although fracking increased the amount of jobs that were available in the U.S, I don't find it justifiable for fracking companies to pollute drinking water just because of that one aspect.

The only thing that i knew about fracking prior to this project was that it was very harmful to do but i had no idea why. After reading about fracking, i can see why people think this. Companies shouldn't have to exploit communities for their oil and definitely shouldn't put their drinking water and their lives at stake for it. There are more ethical means of getting this oil and drilling into the earth and pumping it with thousands of gallons of water to be lost is not one of them. Yes, it creates jobs and gives our country much needed oil, but i would never risk the safety of the people related to it to get it.

I’ve heard of fracking before this project, but I never really knew what it was. Fracking is causing so much damage in the environment and definitely isn’t worth what we’re getting out of it. It would definitely better if they could figure out how to make the process less harmful and more efficient. Fracking, I have learned, not only is harmful to the environment by drilling through the ground and forcing oil up, but it can also cause cancer in humans because of some of the chemicals used. The video of the woman lighting her water on fire was especially scary because it shows that it can affect anyone. This website is really good and you all explained the information perfectly.

Personally i didn't want to know what fracking was... i was definitely thinking about a different kind of chemistry :o however after reading the information and watching the crazy videos I now know that fracking can be very dangerous and even deadly. HOWEVER, if someone put a ten million dollar check in my face I wouldn't be that much of a tree hugger and say no. In all seriousness, fracking seems very dangerous and extremely harmful to the environment and should be illegal in my opinion.

Before reading this, I did not know anything about fracking or hear of it. The fact that in certain areas in the country people can light water on fire is ridiculous. The cons of fracking definitely outweigh the pros. It is beneficial in that we become less dependent on other countries for oil, but they should find an alternative way to mine for oil. Overall, the blog is very well put together and very informative. My opinion on oil mining is definitely changed. Fracking should be banned, especially in areas close to towns or cities.

  17. Fracking is so bad for the environment,so i doubt its really worth destroying the environment to get oil. Personally I think that we should just oil by other means, or find an alternate fuel. However there is a lot of oil that we could use, but we don't use it because oil is under strict regulation, so the problem of oil might not be that it is scarce but it is highly regulated.

  18. Prior to reading this, I only knew of fracking because it was listed on our project paper. Now, I realize what it is and how harmful it is to anyone and anything where fracking is practiced. At first, I thought fracking was not too bad, since it brought a lot of money and energy to the U.S. However, that opinion quickly changed when I read the negative affects fracking has on people and the environment. I am sorry to say this to America, but fracking and its side affects are not something we want to be number one in.
